about

The words בימים ההם בזמן הזה, “bayamim hahem bazman hazeh” (in those [long-ago] days, in this season), invokes for me the image of time as a spiral. I have a childhood memory of walking around the Guggenheim museum in NYC, looking down and around as I walked up the spiral-shaped path, perching in different spots to see the art and people from different angles. I wind around the curve of this year into the strange current iteration of Chanukah, peering down at the rungs of years below and remembering how I felt, what was going on for me and in our world a year ago, 2 years ago, 20 years ago during this season, imagining the generations winding down and around below me, like a strand of DNA.

History repeats itself, and also, we are always in a new moment, every breath new.

Hashem, please deliver us. Please help us become who we are meant to be in this time.

lyrics

Hanerot halalu anu madlikim
Al hanisim ve'al hanifla'ot
Ve'al hatshu'ot ve'al hamilchamot,
Sheh asita lavoteinu
Bayamim haheim, bazman hazeh.
Al yedei kohanecha hakdoshim.
Vechol shmonat yemei Chanukah
Hanerot halalu kodesh hem,
V'ein lanu reshut lehishtamesh bahem,
Ela lirotam bilvad.
Kedei lehodot ulehallel
leshimcha hagadol al nisecha,
Ve'al niflotecha, ve'al yeshuatecha.

Translation (from the Koren siddur):

We light these lights
because of the miracles and wonders,
deliverances and victories
You performed for our ancestors in those days, at this time,
through Your holy priests.

Throughout the eight days of Hanukka
these lights are holy
and we are not permitted
to make any other use of them,
except to look at them,

that we may give thanks and praise to Your great name
for Your miracles, Your wonders and Your deliverances.
